Community medicine course (Public health course)

Overview

This is a PhD program to develop public health specialists who can play leading roles in so ciety and academia.
All of the following lectures are given in English.

Subjects

I. Common core subjects -- 6 credits are required.

--If you take more than 2 credits of advanced core subjects, the credits can be transferred to common core subjects.

  1. Medical and Dental research lectures 2 credits, lectures – required
    Students are required to take at least 15 lectures to obtain the two credits. Students specialized in this course are recommended to the JICA course organized by Prof Takezaki, which holds four 90-minute English lectures designated as “Medical research lectures” .
  2. Ethics and science (Sloan) 2 credits – required
  3. Introduction to Scientific Writing (Sloan) 2 credits- elective
  4. Life Science English (Kusano) 2 credits - elective
II. Advanced core subjects or basic subjects for public health,
hygiene and social medicine

--2 credits are required. Additional credits can be regarded as credits for common core subjects.

  1. Data analysis using R (Koriyama), 1 credit, exercises
  2. Bioinformatics and medical research (Furukawa), 2 credits, lectures and exercises
III. Specialized basic subjects—6 credits required
  1. Comprehensive practice of preventive medicine (Takezaki), 2 credits – required,lectures and exercises
    (students taking this subjects are required to attend JICA course, focusing on community-based comprehensive prevention, organized by Dr Takezaki, to be held in autumn)
  2. Environmental and public health (Horiuchi), 2 credits –required,laboratory training and exercise
  3. Epidemiology (Koriyama), 2 credits
  4. Oral health promotion (Oho), 2 credits
IV Specialized subjects
 (seminar, 4 credits; and scientific paper preparation, 12 credits)

-- students are required to take one of the following subjects to complete community medicine course

 

Hygiene and Health Promotion Medicine,
Life style and metabolic diseases,
Epidemiology and preventive medicine,
Preventive Dentistry,
International island and community medicine
International epidemiological studies in islanders

 

The seminar part of the specialized subjects needs 2 semesters to complete.
If students attend this seminar for an additional semester, they are given 2 more credits, which can be counted as credits of the specialized basic subjects.
